Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications System by European Union

European Union is working on the next-gen vehicle-to-vehicle communications system. They passed an action today to reserve EU-wide frequency band for the vehicle applications. The main aim of the motion is enabling cooperative system between the carmakers along with decreasing road accidents and is also expecting to lead to final roll-out of 1st production models early the next year.

The recent motion is the part of European Union’s Intelligent Car Initiative, opened in 2006, which supports the utilization of the Information and Communication expertise to decrease road accidents and relieve traffic jam.

Motion offers EU-wide frequency brand that shall be utilized for reliable and immediate communication between cars and wayside infrastructure. Frequency range of 30 MHz within 5.9 GHz band will be given out within next 6-months by the national authority only for road safety aapllications. Both United States and the Japan already have reserved same frequency bands for the future vehicle communications system.

The new knowledge will have latent to warn coming vehicles of traffic congestions and risky road conditions. German car manufacturers are expected to initiate extensive field test for vehicle-to-vehicle communications system later on this year.

Ford just launched its ‘Smart Intersection’ technology, which relies on the GPS and the wireless communications technologies to facilitate traffic light and street sign to send warnings to the approaching vehicles, and both Volvo and Nissan proved development plans for same systems in past.
